Choosing A Flagstone Patio
If you are looking to create a patio such as a flagstone patio you have a couple of choices. You can install actual flagstones either by yourself or hire a landscaper to do it for you. This form of flagstone patio can be set in sand which may require some adjustments as time goes by or it can be set in concrete for more permanence and little maintenance. If you plan on a concrete set patio of flagstones a professional will make the job much easier. However if you go the set in sand route you and a neighbor can probably complete it in a few days. The third option is to have a concrete patio poured then stamped to look like real flagstones.
The Design Of A Flagstone Patio
A flagstone patio can add charm to a backyard to a side yard. Flagstone is actual stones that have been cut or broken into odd sized shaped. It is not a symmetric design by the nature of the stones themselves. If you plan on installing it yourself then you will have to do all the measurements and calculate how much stone you will require to complete the patio. Don’t go the cheap route and cut edges because a too small patio will not be used. If you are planning a large patio then you may have to have the flagstones delivered. Keep in mind hen designing it that you will have uneven shapes and sizes that you will have to incorporate into the defined patio area so plan it carefully.
Sand Set Flagstones
If you go the sand route you will be taking down the area of the flagstone patio at least four inches. Your flagstones should be about two inches thick. You will have to level the area and perhaps wet it down to get it level. You will also need a wood form surrounding your area. Plan on spraying weed killer before you install the flagstones. Then build the sand base and install the flagstones in a pleasant design.
Flagstone Stamped Concrete
You can also opt for a flagstone patio that is actually poured concrete. With the current concrete stamps the stamped flagstones look quite real. Concrete flagstones will not shift over time as sand set flagstones may. With concrete you have an assured permanence that can withstand ice and snow and other extreme weather conditions. You do have choices for your flagstone patio.
