Concrete Garden Curbing For Looks

Concrete garden curbing is a process that is now performed with a concrete curb extrusion machine. When you decide to install some form of permanent barrier perhaps as a weed barrier or mower edge one of the relatively low cost solutions is concrete garden curbing. This is a continuous concrete border that requires very little maintenance because concrete is a low maintenance permanent product. Basic concrete can have additives which may make it pourable in almost any weather conditions. Since all concrete cracks concrete curbing uses a form of fibermesh or an equivalent to help prevent this cracking. Also expansion joints are put into the curbing at regular intervals to prevent cracking and splitting.

Variations Of Garden Curbs

There are extrusion machines that can extrude concrete garden curbing which can be in various forms and shapes and sizes within reason. Garden curbing is a popular form of concrete usage in a home garden. Before there were curb extruding machines small enough for a home garden the process was performed by skilled laborers using concrete tools and their hands. Even now the different forms may be given an additional finish before the actual concrete dries and becomes unworkable. The forms available may be the mower edge which is 4” high and 6” long. It may be a sloping border design or a high profile design and can curve, turn and have various contours.

Beginning The Curb Process

When you first call a concrete company that installs concrete garden curbing they will come out and estimate the amount of curbing you require. Generally the curbing is 6 – 7 inches thick so it stands up to freezing, thaws and deicing chemicals. It must also be watertight and be wear resistant. Fibermesh or an equivalent is included in the concrete mix to help prevent cracking. This product can be installed without disturbing your existing plantings. After they do the measurement and you decide on the length of curb you will receive an estimate for your approval.

Final Installation And Care Of Garden Curbs

You can have a color added to the concrete garden curbing or you can have an additional finish or perhaps a stamped design which will cost more. Before they leave the project they will install expansion joints about every 12 to 18 inches to prevent further cracking. The color will not fade and this type of concrete garden curbing is almost maintenance free.
